“but in our stars”

             “but in our stars”

We wonder whether we can ever find

Each other in between our words and signs,

Our gestures with our hands and arms.  We wind

Remembered kisses as if valentines

Among our pains of exile.  Not just lochs

Divide us; more like oceans, time-wide seas,

Pacifics have spread blue tectonic shocks

In love between our would-be helices

We wanted wrapping us, we two around

Each other in the space of soul.  Life hit

Me, hit you harder, knocked you to the ground

In love of one who made love’s counterfeit.

Somewhere between romance and words we failed

Or fate smashed us, our certainties derailed.
