Alone and Unsupported
Within our little lifetimes heroes rose
More great than Heracles, and greater than
Achilles’ myth. John Glenn and Yuri froze
Out Jason in his little Argo. Man
Leapt up beyond the earth, up past the sky,
Beyond the stratosphere, where legends might
Have gone, indeed where legends might just sigh
To be. Men reached the moonscape’s nightmare height.
And Gandhi and one Martin, kings of men,
Rose highest in the realms of ethics. Such
Titanic souls fought evils, and, yes, then
Were killed, but not before heroic touch
Reordered worlds. And then the soaring feat?
Tired Rosa Parks refused to leave her seat.
