A Doll Manufactured before Sex Perhaps: Prelapsarian Porcelain
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
The doll, its face, and limbs, hold dignity
As sweet as childhood when imagined by
A sentimental mind, a pink-glazed Tea
Set type of brain. The blue, blue jewel-like eye
Stares out in purity, an innocence
That happens only in a girl’s young dream
Before she knows the off-white truth and hence
Is pure but isn’t pure. These eyes that gleam
Like Heaven’s heaven have been set above
Her cheeks as smooth as Jesus in the shop
Of shavings. Even He has not learned love
Yet. He will learn it at Golgotha’s top.
..The little doll in froufrou, froufrou silk
.. Is dreaming of the Virgin Mary’s milk.
