Lovers of the Past
Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem
The lovers of the past have disappeared,
Not just the famous ones from centuries gone,
But also those from history so smeared
With myth these lovers like them wear chiffon
As shrouds in almost inaccessible
Sarcophagi. Yet those I want recalled
Are those insistent, irrepressible,
Those near enough in time to be appalled
By threats of being disregarded by
My mind. I call them up from where they rest
Enfolded in love’s coffins where they lie
Embalmed with long cooled vehemence at best.
..We know that they do not remember times
….In sheets with us, not even passion’s crimes.
